It’s weird how prescient science fiction is. I’ve read a couple distressing articles about AI on the last few days alone, and I keep thinking about Dr. Bowman frantically ordering HAL to open the cargo bay doors after it killed everyone else on the mission. Hell yeah we need an off switch. And we also need to seriously consider the impact of the resources that are being diverted to support this thing. Right now NVIDIA is worth something like 5 TRILLION dollars and 10s of thousands of people are losing their livelihood to AI, which is hailed as “the ideal employee”. Meanwhile massive data centers are sprouting up all over the country, adding hundreds of gigawatts of power usage to our already overtaxed infrastructure. #Sci-Fi Fans medium.com/@lindacaroll/a..
